Product Description
An immortal war has been brewing in the darkness . . . And now one woman has stumbled into the shadows.
Chicago private investigator Kira Graceling should have just kept on walking. But her sense of duty refused to let her ignore the moans of pain coming from inside a warehouse just before dawn. Suddenly she finds herself in a world she's only imagined in her worst nightmares. At the center is Mencheres, a breathtaking Master vampire who thought he'd seen it all. Then Kira appears—this fearless, beautiful . . . human who braved death to rescue him. Though he burns for her, keeping Kira in his world means risking her life. Yet sending her away is unthinkable. But with danger closing in, Mencheres must choose either the woman he craves, or embracing the darkest magic to defeat an enemy bent on his eternal destruction.

Yes...yeeessss....yessssssssss...YES YES YES September 5, 2010 AlexJouJou (California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
In the immortal words of Cordelia "Hello Salty Goodness". Mencheres is. He just IS.
He's got himself a fantastic heroine in Kira. Strong, resourceful, graceful, loyal. Mencheres is older than dirt and even after several Cat and Bones books there was much I didn't know about him. He does not need some weak needy heroine who couldn't fight her way out of a ball pit at Mcdonalds. He needs someone who will challenge him on every level and Kira does. She doesn't hide that she finds him attractive and she doesn't mince words when he needs to hear them. Ditto for him to her - and the combo together are dynamite.
As another reviewer noted thanks to the author for this exquisite pairing.
Action, hot love scenes, depth of character, great plot. The underlying theme's of loyalty and sacrifice were not lost on me either.
I think this can be summed up by the ending dialogue between Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman all those years ago...when Richard Gere asks Julia Roberts what the lady does when the hero rescues her (paraphrase..I'm old you know!) and she answers him that the "she rescues him right back".
Exactly.
Amazing!!!!! Mencheres is hot! August 29, 2010 Gwen Nasgowitz (Milwaukee WI) Love the book!
The story was absolutely riveting. I read the book in a day, and then re-read it again! The Master vampire Mencheres, which I just knew had to have an interesting story-line, since he was portrayed as such a bad-guy, had his chance to shine in this book. I fell in love with his character, and Kira's too, and definitely wanted the story never to end. His relationship with Kira and his powers as well as his life-line (haveing been a former Pharoah), is something I would like to read more about. This book is definitely a winner. I kind of hope there are books on Ian and Vlad later on in the series. It would be kind of interesting to see those characters evolved as well.
awesome book August 28, 2010 ccterry07 jeaniene frost knows how to write ! loved the characters ...... everything you could ask for in a book
Enjoyable but not as good as Cat and Bones August 27, 2010 Malli22 (Texas) I was very skeptical about this book. Mencheres was never one of my favorite characters... by a long shot. I don't know why, I just was never sympathetic to his plight - despite all we learn about Patra in 'At Grave's End'. But, that being said, I still read it. I love Jeannine Frost. She's redeemed the supernatural/romance genre in my opinion.
This story picks up after the other 'Night Huntress' book, in which Mencheres has lost his ability to see the future. When he attempts, he only sees darkness. He interrupts this as his looming death. Being obligingly ;) he decides to help it along. Death-by-ghouls... but Kira, a private investigator, discovers the fight and interferes. In order to save her life, Mencheres unleashes his mega-watt power and kills the gang, taking Kira with him.
Long story short: she stays with him for a week. The two dance around each other. When he releases her back into her normal life, she ends up in a pickle and they are soon reunited.
Kira is an interesting character overall. She's very tough, very clever. But... VERY stubborn. Its a bit annoying at times, but Frost keeps Kira's character 100% true - no wavering in her traits.
Kira only really bothers me when she meets Cat and Bones. Since Kira is a completely new character to this world (unlike Denise in 'First Drop of Crimson'), she doesn't already hold an opinion about Cat/Bones. She's very distrustful and thinks they aren't good enough friends/allies to Mencheres. Her position is understandable, but since I've followed Cat/Bones' exploits for five books + short stories, its a bit exasperating. Also, the book deals a lot with her transition to the supernatural world... again, completely understandable to her character, but I've already read about these transitions over and over in the past books.
Mencheres seemed a bit weak to me. He's very guilt ridden and apathetic of his life. He is 4500-years-old after all... but, at times I felt Kira is patronizing to him. Often times she completely bull-dozes him. This is also my complaint against the Sookie/Eric pairing in SVM. The vampire has so, so much life experience, but the thirty-something woman is somehow more clever? Doesn't ring true to me.
I was very happy that Vlad was in this book. He's one of my favorite characters. I love how he and Bones constantly antagonize each other. He just wasn't in this book enough for my taste... :) I think a book focused on his character would be wonderful since he has such a rich and, often times, tragic history.
Basically, this book doesn't hurt the franchise, but it doesn't help it either. I could of skipped it and not missed much.
If you haven't read any of the 'Night Huntress' books, you don't need to in order to understand this one. However, I would strongly recommend them. The two series run parallel to each other. The Cat and Bones stories are the original 'Night Huntress' books. This one and 'First Drop of Crimson' are 'Night Huntress World'. They both deal with peripheral characters from the main series.
I think the Mencheres/Kira pairing doesn't match Spade/Denise, by far paling in comparison to Bones/Cat.
Expectations Exceeded!!! August 23, 2010 Leslie M Duncan (Bellevue, WA, US) What a great addition to the series! I love the Mencheres character and couldn't wait to read his story. You will enjoy it, absolutely! A definate addition to my reading library that will be read over and over. It also has a nice excerpt from the next Bones & Cat book.
