For a vampire, Anthony isn’t a picky eater, but he’s drawn to Charlee’s blood more than any other. Like a fine wine saved for a special occasion, he’s denied himself this pleasure. But one night, high from the potent magical blood of another, he claims his prize and loses control. Ashamed of almost killing the one woman who means anything to him, he wipes her memory of the event. When Charlee awakens with complete amnesia, Anthony is the only one who can clean up the mess he’s made.

EXCERPT FROM CLAIMED:
She lifted her eyes to his, all thoughts of self-preservation tossed aside. “I’m not your pet.” Behind the brave facade was the question, wondering if that was how he’d classed her.
He made a sound of disgust. “Vampire groupies. Don’t listen to anything that girl has to say. No, you’re not my pet, Charlotte. If you were my pet, you’d be enthralled. And if I’d trusted you enough to leave you to your free will, you would be in severe trouble for this.”
Anthony raised his hand again displaying the burn mark. The bagged blood working through his system had healed it a bit further but not enough.
He leaned in close to her and inhaled. He nuzzled her throat, his tongue creeping out to trail down the side of her neck, the tips of his fangs barely skimming her tender flesh. Then he was on the other side of the cramped elevator. He gripped the railing for support and looked up, shocked. She held a cross in front of her, her hand shaking.
Her other hand covered the place where his fangs had almost penetrated, as if by covering it, he could no longer smell the blood rushing by. “You said, not me.”
“Put it away, Charlotte.”
“And be dinner? Gee, I’m thinking no.”

Amazing story August 30, 2010 D. Mesinas The story amazing, the way Zoe brings secondary characters fron the first book to tell their story is awesome, really enjoy the reading!!
An exciting second book in the Preternaturals Series August 22, 2010 Book of Secrets (Midwest, USA) The story of Cary Town's preternatural beings continues in Zoe Winter's exciting second novella Claimed. We briefly meet the nearly 500-year old vampire Anthony and his human obsession Charlee in the first book Kept. Anthony has longed to taste Charlee's blood but has managed to keep his lust under control, that is until the night he drinks the drug-tainted blood of a powerful shifter. No longer able to control his hunger, he attacks Charlee and feasts on her blood almost killing her. Ashamed of what he has done and not wanting Charlee to think of him as a monster, he attempts to wipe her memory of the assault but mistakenly gives her complete amnesia. The timing of Anthony's indiscretion could not be worse, as he is competing in the tournament that will decide the next vampire king within days. His main rival for the crown Linus, a cruel vampire who wants to return the coven to the ways of the dark ages, would love nothing more than to take Charlee and use her in her most vulnerable state to hurt Anthony. He decides the only way to protect Charlee is to claim her as his own, but at what cost? Will his coven accept a human mate? And will Charlee accept him if she ever remembers the truth?
I loved this story! I really enjoyed the first book Kept, but I liked this one even more. For a short book, there was a lot going on, but the story never felt rushed. The premise was original - a vampire has to fix his mistake of wiping a human's mind clean, a human he happens to care for a great deal, which conflicts with his vampire nature. The characters were well-developed. I was particularly impressed with Charlee's character. I think it would be difficult to write an engaging character with complete amnesia, especially one we didn't know much about to begin with, but the author seems to have done so effortlessly. Anthony was the perfect sexy tortured hero (tall, blond - I'm thinking Alexander Skarsgard, of course), and I loved the glimpse of his inner demon we're given as he looks into the mirror. The two had great chemistry complete with deep, comflicting emotions and sexual tension. The snarky banter between them added nice humor to the story. I was intrigued by the secondary character Jane, a goth-girl vampire groupie, though underneath there is much more. I'm happy to say her story is told in the next book Mated. What I love about this series as a whole is the solid world building and variety of preternatural beings living in that world. There are sorcerers, shifters, vampires, guardians, wizards and, of course, humans. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next. I would definitely recommend this series to fans of paranormal romance.
decent book August 19, 2010 C.K. (Illinois) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Good "Harlequin" type romance novel with a vamp twist. Not up to the Nora Roberts standard of romance. Interesting story line keeps you reading and just a touch of romance.
Still Creative, But Had Less Charm For Me Than Kept August 9, 2010 Tracy (Fort Myers, Florida, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Picking up where Kept (Blood Lust, novella 1 ) ended, more or less, the vampire Anthony is reeling from the drugs he drew out of Greta when he came to Dayne's aid. In his flight from the circle in which Greta had been nearly killed he comes across Charlee's house, blitzed out of his mind and at the mercy of his demon. When he's near Charlee, the scent of her fear heightens senses already pushed to the brink and he feeds from her - almost drains her. Mindless with blood lust, he manages to keep from killing the young woman he's always enjoyed verbally sparring with, but when he wipes her memory of the event, Anthony accidentally wipes her entire memory. Charlee wakes up the next day with no idea who she is, where she is, or what's going on.
Charlee uses some deductive reasoning to hook up with Greta, who takes her to Dayne, who calls in Anthony. Over her friend's objection, Charlee goes with Anthony, who needs to protect Charlee from Linus, an ancient vampire in town for the centennial tournament to determine the king of the vampires for the country. Anthony's by no means a boy scout but Linus is pure evil, and he likes collecting mistakes like Charlee for his own nefarious purposes. Problem is, Charlee's memory might be gone, but she's not stupid, and she doesn't trust Anthony even before she finds out he's a vampire. After...well...lets just say she's got faith and a cross and isn't afraid to use either.
This is the second novella in the Blood Lust trilogy, and I was a little leery of it because I wasn't too fond of Charlee's character in the first one. What I did like about Kept, though, was the original and intriguing mythos and world building that Zoe managed to expound on to pleasantly surprising levels and the sarcastic banter between the two lead characters.
I had similar hopes for Claimed, and some of them were realized. I again give credit to Winters for her ability to flesh out a world and define a species and its culture, in this case the vampires, in a way that's more comprehensive than some full length novels I've read. I also liked the widened scope of characters here, with Greta and Dayne playing a part in the beginning, and later seeing the addition of others that added to the plot development. I liked Anthony the first time around and appreciated the closer look I got of him in this one, as well.
I still think the narrative is a little choppy, especially at the beginning, and I had some problems with the dialogue throughout, though again, much more heavily towards the beginning. It too often seems stilted and inorganic to the characters or to any natural conversational progression. Internal monologues didn't suffer in quite the same way, though, and that was an improvement. I wish the beginning had been conceived differently, because I really had some issues with it, and didn't think the novella really started to grow on me until Charlee and Anthony were back at his place.
The biggest problem I had with Claimed, though, is in no way a critique of the story or the author, and really isn't anything that can be changed. I couldn't stand Charlee. That happens sometimes, personal preferences in characters sometimes just aren't met. It doesn't mean that someone else wouldn't like her, because it's totally subjective, but she represented quite a few of my own personal bugaboos for female lead characters. When suffering from amnesia she came across as too weak and easily led, and even her brief flashes of temper seemed more petulant than independent, and after the amnesia was resolved, she alternated between horrified and bitchy, neither of which I found attractive. I only wish there had been a detente with Anthony prior to the events in the Tournament, because without it, the change in their relationship seemed a bit too abrupt. Further details withheld to prevent spoilers.
I wish there had been more banter between Anthony and Charlee, because Winters did that really well in Kept, and I wish I didn't detest Charlee quite so much. I still have Mated (Blood Lust, novella 3) to read yet, though, and I'm looking forward to it.

Thoroughly Enjoyed This Book Series! July 30, 2010 Michele Ferrette (Mechanicsville, VA) I love this book! In fact I have enjoyed the entire series! Zoe Winters does a wonderful job in weaving this store. Even though this is a novell, I was still able to understand the story. The problem I sometimes have with novells is that sometimes the store goes from point A to point E and points B and C are missing which makes the story confusing but not in this story, it is all there. Ms. Winters wrote a novell with a novel size feel.
