Amazon.com Review
In 1978, science fiction writer Spider Robinson wrote a scathing review of The Stand in which he exhorted his readers to grab strangers in bookstores and beg them not to buy it.

The Stand is like that. You either love it or hate it, but you can't ignore it. Stephen King's most popular book, according to polls of his fans, is an end-of-the-world scenario: a rapidly mutating flu virus is accidentally released from a U.S. military facility and wipes out 99 and 44/100 percent of the world's population, thus setting the stage for an apocalyptic confrontation between Good and Evil.

"I love to burn things up," King says. "It's the werewolf in me, I guess.... The Stand was particularly fulfilling, because there I got a chance to scrub the whole human race, and man, it was fun! ... Much of the compulsive, driven feeling I had while I worked on The Stand came from the vicarious thrill of imagining an entire entrenched social order destroyed in one stroke."

There is much to admire in The Stand: the vivid thumbnail sketches with which King populates a whole landscape with dozens of believable characters; the deep sense of nostalgia for things left behind; the way it subverts our sense of reality by showing us a world we find familiar, then flipping it over to reveal the darkness underneath. Anyone who wants to know, or claims to know, the heart of the American experience needs to read this book. --Fiona Webster

Product Description
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death.

And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides -- or are chosen. A world in which good rides on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old Mother Abigail -- and the worst nightmares of evil are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the dark man.

In 1978 Stephen King published The Stand, the novel that is now considered to be one of his finest works. But as it was first published, The Stand was incomplete, since more than 150,000 words had been cut from the original manuscript.

Now Stephen King's apocalyptic vision of a world blasted by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil has been restored to its entirety. The Stand : The Complete And Uncut Edition includes more than five hundred pages of material previously deleted, along with new material that King added as he reworked the manuscript for a new generation. It gives us new characters and endows familiar ones with new depths. It has a new beginning and a new ending. What emerges is a gripping work with the scope and moral comlexity of a true epic.

For hundreds of thousands of fans who read The Stand in its original version and wanted more, this new edition is Stephen King's gift. And those who are reading The Stand for the first time will discover a triumphant and eerily plausible work of the imagination that takes on the issues that will determine our survival.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book   August 31, 2010
Constant Reader
This is the best Post Apocalyptic book I have read yet. King delivers as he always does living up to his reputation of the best novelist in history, in my opinion. A must read for anyone who likes this genre and a challenge to see if it will break into your top 5 all time favorite novels

5 out of 5 stars Chillin' with the Captain   August 28, 2010

The Stand is one of the best books I have ever read in my life. I failed 9th grade mathematics because i decided to redad this the last month in all my classes instead of paying attnetion when this idea had just came out. And then the unabridged version came out. To say that the additions were beuatiulf is, to me, an understatement because there is so much hidden inside of those pages. you have characters breathing, plots brewing, the world dying, and "him" walking amongst the corn and calling all his children.
Here is your greatest two forces collide book ever penned.

Basically, you ahve a problem in a military facility and that leads to the release of a little thing called Captain Tripps. The good Captain then gets out as a guard does his best to escape and stay alive, and manages to hit a fuel pump as it goes. This leads you to your firs toutbreak AND your first imunity. Over time, many people find that they have weird dreams and that they have an immunity to the Captain. The dreams involve either a man in black travelling what looks like a wasteland or an elderly balck woman sitting on her porch and rocking her guitar. Mother Abby is a nice touch, too, and she sort of talks about what "he" is and what should happen. This leads people to start gathering in places and, eventually, to do all types of stupid things that make you go "hmmmm."
Its beautifuly human.

I would like to say that comeenting on the books simply doesn;t do much. The best way to do this is to comment on the pages by saying that everything is in order and that, in reading, it will utterly win you over. When you lok at the size of the book you would think otherwise, but that is quaite possibly the mistake of sooo many. This is one of the best books out there, hands down. And now, with graphic novels coming out about it, it just builds on what this book really is.

I would write more but over 1,000 comments ar ehere. I simply hope I help and convince you to get that Kindle out there and pick up the right type of luggage for this gargantuan trip.
5 stars doesn't do this justice.

5 out of 5 stars The midnight candle burned out...   August 26, 2010

This is a book that will make you stay awake burning the midnight oil. I recommend it for all people. However, I do know that some people like to have something going on constantly rather than the slow pace the book presents. This book draws the readers into a world and follows the characters doing the mundane things. This to me brings the characters to a more realistic image in my imagination. So when calamity falls on the characters I did gasp and cringe in horror. I did whoop and cry in joy for the good parts. A masterful weave of a tale. I hope the department of Defense picks up Stephen King as a participant in a think tank for I bet he can bring things to a more realistic scenario in "end of the days" scenarios. I highly recommend this book. I know that from reading other reviews that this book is either one people love or hate , I only have this to say to the haters...You can buy this book for less than what a movie cost so if you hate it your not out of a lot of money. If you do end up liking this book the size will be pleasant with hours upon hours of reading this book. I confess that this is my 4th or 5th copy in the last 4 years. I just bought a kindle version which I will read on my little itty bitty andriod phone screen.

It appears the book was never sent out. Seller never even sent an e-mail of explanation--even after a month had passed. Don't shop here.
