Amazon.com Review
The Necromancer, book four in Michael Scott's "Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel" series, brings the immortal Flamel (The Alchemyst) and teenaged twins, Sophie and Josh, back home to San Francisco, where they meet up with the sorceress Perenelle, Flamel's wife, who spent the last book escaping from Alcatraz. Time is running out for the Flamels; it's now been six days since their foe Dr. John Dee (another immortal) ran off with the Codex, the book of Abraham the Mage that keeps them young, and they are aging fast. The twins, who have been learning the Elemental Magics over the course of the first three books, are worried about getting into trouble for basically disappearing for days, so they check in with their guardian, Aunt Agnes. But Scott doesn't let them settle in for long. True to the break-neck pace of this series, they are quickly pulled back into the action when Sophie is kidnapped by a redheaded vampire who bears an eerie resemblance to one of their recent allies, Scathach, who disappeared with Joan of Arc in the last book. The Necromancer introduces readers to even more infamous immortals, while keeping up with favorites from past books--Machiavelli, Shakespeare, Billy the Kid. As the characters accumulate, so do the opportunities for hair-raising conflicts and insane reveals. Scott manages their multiple story lines with a sequence of cliffhangers that keep it a really fun read even as he is piling on the history and mythology, taking readers further into the secrets that will bring the whole story together. As the characters hurtle toward a conflict that could bring about the end of the world, we can't wait to see where they'll go, what they'll learn, and who they'll meet next. (Ages 12 and up.)

Product Description
The fourth book in the New York Times bestselling series The Secrets of the Nicholas Flamel--The Necromancer

San Francisco:
After fleeing to Ojai, then Paris, and escaping to London, Josh and Sophie Newman are finally home. And after everything they've seen and learned in the past week, they're both more confused than ever about their future. Neither of them has mastered the magics they'll need to protect themselves from the Dark Elders, they've lost Scatty, and they're still being pursued by Dr. John Dee. Most disturbing of all, however, is that now they must ask themselves, can they trust Nicholas Flamel? Can they trust anyone?

Alcatraz:
Dr. Dee underestimated Perenelle Flamel's power. Alcatraz could not hold her, Nereus was no match for her, and she was able to align herself with the most unlikely of allies. But she wasn't the only one being held on the island. Behind the prison's bars and protective sigils were a menagerie of monsters-an army for Dee to use in the final battle. And now Machiavelli has come to Alcatraz to loose those monsters on San Francisco.
Perenelle might be powerful, but each day she weakens, and even with Nicholas back at her side, a battle of this size could be too much for her. Nicholas and Perenelle must fight to protect the city, but the effort will probably kill them both.

London:
Having been unable to regain the two final pages of the Codex, Dee has failed his Elder and is now an outlaw-and the new prey of all the creatures formerly sent to hunt down Flamel.
But Dee has a plan. With the Codex and the creatures on Alcatraz, he can control the world. All he needs is the help of the Archons. But for his plan to work, he must raise the Mother of the Gods from the dead. For that, he'll have to train a necromancer. And the twins of legend will make the perfect pupils. . . .

3 out of 5 stars It fills the lunch hour   August 27, 2010

****Early Spoiler alert******

I suspect I'm in this series for the long haul... The overall story appeals to me, and I've always enjoyed plays on mythology. That said, I find myself feeling increasingly frustrated with the series.

As stated by other reviewers, the overall plot plods along, despite the frequency of encounters. I believe only three or four days have passed since the whole mess started, with a couple weeks to go.

Are the Elder completely unable of acting for themselves? With the frequency in which in their tools seem to fail in this matter, does no one think that perhaps they should cut out the middle man and do it themselves? For all-powerful elders, they can't seem to do a lot beyond make people immortal.

The characters... The characters have been bugging me lately.. they feel flat and nearly identical, for all their differences. You can tell me their traits till you're blue in the face.. but if they all act and respond to things the same way, they're all the same character. You can argue this, if you like, but to me the differences feel so minor, that it seems emotion takes a back seat to explaining things. Though, nothing of any real importance seems to get explained.

There seem to be a lot of retcons. Granted, I know a lot of mythology is subjective, but in many cases it almost feels like Scott can't decide which angle to take on it and make be the 'truth', and he seems to constantly be adjusting said truth.

Overall, the story feels like it was transcribed from a long, annoying D&D game, where the DM tried to prolong the end of his campaign as long as possible.

For some reason, I find myself voting for Dee and Dare. :P

Well written, quick moving a total page turner. I had to force myself to put it down so I could focus on other tasks. I've read the whole series of (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel) and I'm now waiting for the next book in the series.

She loved this book. First, she went on a reading strike for two weeks while waiting for its release. Then, when it finally arrived she was gone until she finished it. She has very much enjoyed the entire series and at age 11 recommends it highly. (I haven't read it, but have promised to do so.)

Sophie and Josh return home, unsure what to tell their Aunt about their adventures of the past few days. They certainly can't tell her the truth. As they walk up the road, they notice a car outside the house.

Curious and hesitant, they approach the car. A woman exits and they believe it's someone they know. However, almost too late, they realize it's an identical twin. Sophie ends up kidnapped and Josh left scrambling behind.

In order to save his sister, he travels back to the start of their adventure, the Flamels. Once he confides in them, they quickly follow after Sophie.

The Flamels don't have much time and they have already decided to fight before things spiral too far out of control, even though it might be the last thing they accomplish. They find Sophie and those watching over her. Together, they come up with a plan of attack.

Before they can accomplish their goals, they request someone to awake the fire powers in Josh. He readily agrees to the plan, already feeling inferior to his twin.

However, the Flamels didn't consider Dr. Dee in their planning. While his masters aren't pleased with his failures, Dr. Dee always has a plan. This plan includes taking over the world, but he needs Josh in order to set his plan in motion. Will Josh cross over to the other side and leave his twin and the Flamels behind?

The fourth book in this wonderful series won't disappoint fans with its magic, history, mythology, clever characters, evil plots, and strong sibling bonds. THE SECRETS OF THE IMMORTAL NICHOLAS FLAMEL is addicting and will leave readers on the edge of their seats.

5 out of 5 stars NOT just for young adults!!!   August 9, 2010

I'm 60 years old, and love this series. Sure, I wish Josh and Sophie weren't in it as much, but only because Josh is so STUPID. That's the only thing I don't really enjoy. The rest of the characters are just fabulous. Every book gets better. There is no sex or graphic violence (against people, anyway), but there is just a terrific story. Can't wait for the next books.
