Product Description
From the New York Times bestselling author of the Night Huntress series comes a breathtaking new journey to the dark side of desire. The night is not safe for mortals. Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows—her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield—and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family's past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness—and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who lusts for a taste of her. He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human—even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the nightmare together . . . Because once the first crimson drop falls, they will both be lost.

Like the new romance spin off but heroine was not my fave September 5, 2010 AlexJouJou (California) One thing that will get me like nothing else - a whiny irritating and ungrateful heroine. Which Denise spends some time being in this novel. Man Denise you are shaming all us other humans! Get with the program girl!! When a super hot vampire guy wants to help you LET HIM. Don't insult him by always talking about money and focusing on yourself. And stop your doggone whining about everything. And this prejudice you got going girl - get over it! I mean your best friend is a VAMPIRE. Her husband is a VAMPIRE. You asked a VAMPIRE for help. It's a little late to not be liking them now - I mean HELLO. Dang. I love cats but even I wanted them to leave that pet carrier on the tarmac!
I cannot tell a lie though - there was a certain, shall we say, satisfaction, with how this book ended. For as beastly in attitude as Denise was in much of the book - well let's just say karma can come knocking anyday and leave it at that. Definitely upped it a star for me.
Spade was really good and patient for much of it. He always seemed a little mamby-pamby to me in the Cat and Bones but here he proves he's got the kahones to handle the leading man role. His bud Ian is classic - how he can exasperate me and make me love him at the same time ..that's real talent! Cat and Bones have a cameo - nothing special.
I think this could be a stand alone but there is no reason under the sun that you should not read the first 4 Night Huntress novels - if you don't you'll really be missing something!
Love it August 27, 2010 Donna Simmonds (Chicago, IL USA) Great book. I love the Cat and Bones books already so was excited to learn more about Spade. I was also glad to see Denise come back and get her own story. If you already love Cat and Bones you will love Spade's book. If you havent read any of the Cat and Bones novels you wont feel behind in this one. Its a great companion book to the existing series. Cant wait to read Mencheres story next!
Drop right in!! Don't miss this ride! August 25, 2010 A. McKinnon Ms Frost introduced the two characters featured here, Spade and Denise, in her "Night Huntress" series.
PERSONAL NOTE: If you have not yet read those- you SHOULD! They are great books and I think reading those first makes this book that much more vivid. There are some events that take place in the Night Huntress series that set up this story. It isn't absolutely necessary to read those parts first, but if you're anything like me, you will hate to be left behind. So... if you haven't yet, Halfway to the Grave should be your first stop.
Now, for those of you who might hesitate to read this because you love the Night Huntress series so why risk disappointment... (This was me.) You will NOT be disappointed. This is not the same series- though Bones & Kat make an appearance and bring their characteristic charm- but these characters are just as compelling and the telltale Frost trademarks of playful romance, high stakes, fast pacing, tension building uncertainty are all present. I am THRILLED that Ms. Frost expanded her writing to tell us more about this universe she has created.
I loved the Spade character already and fell hard for him again here, but I needed to be sold on Denise and was I ever. I won't go through plot points- because you should just go read them. This story passes by you like the scenery out the window of a high end sports car. Enjoy the ride. I can't wait for another trip.
First Drop of Crimson by Jeaniene Frost August 23, 2010 A Bookworms Haven I have been reading a lot of YA books lately and I love them! I do, but I needed a break from the angst, anyone else ever feel like that? Well, now and then I do. So I turned to Jeaniene Frost, I have loved her books in the past so I thought this would be a good change of pace for me. I do have to admit to something though, I have had this book since February and I have not read it until now, and it is August. I know, I was not sure why I kept putting it off because I love Jeaniene's other books with Cat and Bones and then I realized that was it. I think I am so invested in Cat and Bones story I did not think I would like anyone else's story would compare. I was definitely wrong, I am sorry for doubting your mad skills to write one hot vampire Jeaniene, because that is exactly what Spade is. I have not really paid attention to him in the past (mainly because Bones kinda takes up all your attention, right?) Well, you are forced to pay attention to him now and he is worth it. I did miss Cat a little, but while Denise is not quite as strong as Cat she is still a great leading character and I feel in love with her for other reasons. Plus, Bones and Cat do make a little cameo so that was a nice surprise.
This book has all the elements I love about the Night Huntress World, the paranormal, the fighting, the passion, the villain always looming and of course, the vampires. Denise is looking for a distant relative, Nathanial, who made deal with a demon and then tricked him. Now the demon wants Nathanial back and he is killing off Denise's family as revenge. Denise has to search for Nathanial to try and save the rest of her family, and herself, from being next. The only trouble is she has no idea where to find him and since the death of her husband, Randy, she has cut her self off from the vampire world so when she tries to get in touch with Cat and Bones she cannot find them. She turns to the only other vamp's number she does have, Spade. Thus, the journey begins for the two of them.
Denise has been through a lot with vamps so being comfortable around them is very difficult for her and she often has panic attacks because of her post traumatic stress disorder. I mean, who can blame her, she watched her husband die in a brutal battle of the undead, of course she has some leftover issues going on. I found it very intriguing to watch her try and work through some of those issues with Spade and learn to trust him. That is also why I liked that we got the inner monologue of both Denise and Spade because while Denise is doubting her thoughts Spade is thinking almost the complete opposite. I had to laugh to myself about that sometimes, because it was funny to watch what both of them were thinking and how similar the thoughts really were without them realizing.
I am so glad I finally read this book because Spade is right up there with Bones for me now. I hope he drops in every now and then in the other books so we can get a glimpse of the two of them in the future. I will definitely not be doubting Jeaniene again and I have already downloaded the other spin off in this world Eternal Kiss of Darkness and will be reading that next
First Drop of Crimson August 23, 2010 N. Kirby This book goes deeper into Spade's background. He is helping Denise to keep her from a demon. Bones and Cat are also in the book. You will not be disappointed. Jeaniene Frost has accomplished what most authors cannot accomplish and that is the book grabs you from the beginning and you will not want to put it down.
