Editorial Reviews:

Once you settle into the realization that this 1986 John Carpenter (Halloween) film is not going to be one of the director's more masterful works, Big Trouble in Little China just becomes a full-tilt comic blast. Kurt Russell is hilarious as a drawling, would-be John Wayne hero who steps into the middle of a supernatural war in the heart of Chinatown. While kung fu warriors and otherworldly spirits battle over the fate of two women (Kim Cattrall and Suzee Pai), Russell's swaggering idiot manages to knock himself out or underestimate the forces he's dealing with. The whole thing is dopey, but it's supposed to be dopey and Russell's game performance brings an ironic edge. Carpenter directs some nifty spook effects (the sudden arrival of three martial arts demigods from out of nowhere is worth applause), and he also wrote the music. --Tom Keogh

Description
Directed by thrill master John Carpenter, this edge-of-your seat adventure stars Kurt Russell as Jack Burton, a tough-talking, wisecracking truck driver whose hum-drum life on the road takes a sudden supernatural tailspin when his best friend's fiancee is kidnapped. Speeding to the rescue, Jack finds himself deep beneath San Francisco's Chinatown, in a murky, creature-filled world ruled by Lo Pan, a 2000-year-old magician who mercilessly presides over an empire of spirits. Dodging demons and facing baffling terrors, Jack battles his way through Lo Pan's dark domain in a full-throttle, action-riddled ride to rescue the girl. Co-starring Kim Cattrall, this effects-filled sci-fi spectacle speeds to an incredible, twist-taking finish.

5 out of 5 stars Good but could be better   July 29, 2010
YO
I LOVE THIS MOVIE its great, everyone should see this movie... However I bought this with the fifth element (remastered) on blu ray. The quality on the fifth element was AMAZING. Then I watched this and was rather disappointed. It looked better then the DVD but no where as spectacular as the fifth element was. Maybe they did it cheap and didn't remaster big trouble. I still enjoy it the quality is good worth a buy if your a fan of the movie and already have a DVD copy. If you have not seen it get it.

5 out of 5 stars A very different, very enjoyable film   July 11, 2010

From Jack Burton's first voice over to his last, Big Trouble in Little China provides you with a roller coaster ride you won't forget.

Truck drivin' Jack becomes inadvertently involved when a friend's bride from China is kidnapped by a centuries old magician/demon. Martial arts fights, gun fights, and magical fights ensue .. with huge does of 'cool factor' along with perfectly timed dollops of humor, most from Kurt Russell as Jack Burton. While Jack's ego writes checks his actual skill set can't cash, still he doesn't back down from frightening situations he can't understand, does his best, and in the end, helps to save the day.

I'd never seen a plot very much like this before I saw Big Trouble in Little China, and not much like it since then. The special effects for magic are outstanding, especially since the movie is more than 20 years dated now. The fights ... ala Hong Kong cinema ... are great fun. What could have been an excellent straight up action flick is geniously infected by just the right touches of farce and even slap-stick. You'll love Jack's heroic pronoucements.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "Favorite Carpenter/Russell Film!"   April 19, 2010

Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall star in John Carpenter's 1986 action/
adventure. A trucker helps rescue his friend's fiancee from an evil
magician. This is my favorite John Carpenter/Kurt Russell film and
Kurt is great as Jack Burton. James Hong is also great as David
LoPan and this special edition has good picture and sound plus
cool extras. I definitely recommend this.

3 out of 5 stars Blu Ray not-so-HD   February 19, 2010

This is one of my favorite flicks. Sadly, I'm coming to a conclusion that most blu ray disk titles don't have a transfer that is any better than the DVD. This looks pretty much exact to the special edition DVD release. Based on my experiences with other Blu Ray titles, this is actually better than normal. Movies like Stargate and Total Recall blu ray disks, in my opinion, look WORSE than the DVD copy.
