| Customer Reviews: A very real and touching story June 24, 2010 R. Lewis (Lake Oswego) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
In the beginning it lacks polish but by the end you are amazed with how they pulled it off so well. A very meaningful movie for anyone whose father fought in the war.
true war story with heart June 14, 2010 Michael P. Dobey (colorado springs) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This movie is a excellent war movie. It's not the highest budget flick and it has many first time actors in it but it's better than some larger budget movies because it has a true story and alot of heart to relie on. The war wounds look convincing but you don't actually see men fly apart as a higher budget flick would show you.
But that's fine because you understand how bad war can be and how most men just want it to end eventually. That being said they are willing to stay and fight in what they believe in. The germans in this movie are depicted as human beings as well. In fact the main narrator runs into a german soldier who has lost everything and everyone. Which would be quite common for many germans , and other europeons as well in those days. Something we spoiled people of this century often don't try to grasp, destruction isn't a video game it has real consequencs. The movie is a salute to the 94 inf and they never lost ground and served under the great general Patton. And the film looks great on dvd , with no aritifacts or other problems.
This is a superior lower budget movie (but it's still well done enough that you won't notice) by any standards and it's done so well and it does have a emotional punch as the now ederly soldier pines for his long dead friends at the end.
Excellent film--true story! May 17, 2010 Noonie Fortin (Albany, NY) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
"Everyman's War" is just that! It is based on the true story of Staff Sergeant Don Smith and his group of infantrymen during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. This movie follows the men of the 9/4 Infantry in the snowy mountains near Nennig, Germany. They were up against the German 11th Panzer "Ghost" division but Don's group stood their ground. Throughout the film each soldier was introduced along with a little about his life before the war. The film gave a personal feel for each man and the families they left behind. It also showed an update as to what became of them during the war as well as those who survived after the war. This film ranks among the best such as "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers."
Love, hope and war April 30, 2010 MsMarti (USA) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I liked the plot, and I found it interesting how they followed people from very different walks of life as they came together on the transport ship on the way to the war. We started in the present day time frame, then went back to 1943-1945. They did a good job of melding the present with the past, it wasn't disjointed.
From a chance meeting in town, to a missed Sadie Hawkins dance, love began but the war pulled them apart. We watch as both SSG Don Smith and the girl he fell for begin to write letters to each other.
We see the importance of a letter from home, a picture of the family or girlfriend and the impact they have on the soldiers. You hear it in their voices when the talk turns to back home. I couldn't stop thinking about those letters. Hope was there, an anchor when all around them, all hell was breaking loose. I kept thinking, when was Smith going to finish and mail his letter? Would he wait too long? Would love be lost? Would he be killed before he could mail it?
For me, Everyman's War was interesting and I was thankful they didn't focus on what I call the gore aspect that so many war movies seem to be famous for. You most definitely saw the dead, wounded and dying, they just didn't fixate on them. You are there on the frontline of a critical battle as it takes place at Nennig Germany during the Battle of the Bulge.
I would recommend this movie! No, it isn't a big budget movie like Saving Private Ryan, but it has a great story line and they do a good job of bringing us with them to the front lines of WWII.
